General Notes on Water Metering

Collected notes on water metering:

  • 2008 Figures
  • 700 million water meters globally (representing 60% of all households)
  • 27.5 million AMR water meters globally
  • General Notes
  • Meter accuracy can be affected by how and where the meter is installed – e.g. horizontal, vertical, or proximity to a curve in the supply pipe
  • the tolerance of the water to the flow rate of the meter can result in over/under registration
  • accuracy is affected by meter wear, which can be compounded by the type of meter construction and the ‘aggressiveness’ of the water in the system
  • New York Water Facts & Figures
    • Average Indoor Water Usage Per Person (Not Customer): New Yorkers consume 65 – 75 gallons of water per day per person, which is equivalent to $146 – 169 per year per person.  Hence, a family of four would consume 260 – 300 gallons of water per day in total.
    • Average New York Home Water Usage:
      toilets 28%, clothes washers 21%, showers 17%, faucets 15%, leaks 14%, other 5%
