Smart Metering Notes: (Collected from a Variety of Sources)

ERSE – Portuguese energy regulator – has proposed a massive deployment of smart metering.

Work by EDP Distribuicao (national electricity distributor) to improve the infrastructure, encompassing smart metering and smart grid – called the InovGrid project, with three major goals:

  • Energy management – providing smart metering tools for customers and market agents, alongside new machanisms for network operation and control.
  • Micro and distributed generation
  • Smart grids – increasing the automation level in all network layers, upgrading operational effectiveness and efficiency

The key functional component of InovGrid appears to be an intelligent home energy gateway working with smart metering and remote power control. There will be intelligent concentrators in LV/MV substations. The technologies are expected to be (at least initially) narrowband PLC and GSM/GPRS, although ZigBee and more sophisticated PLC solutions are on the radar.

Expecting to test the InovGrid proposals using a trial of approx. 100,000 customers. Companies invloved include EDPD, EDP inovacao, Janz, Contar, Logica and INES Porto.
