General Notes
- Market is regulated by e control – www.e-control.at. The website includes details of who operates within the market.
- 600,000 electricity meters feature ripple control for an interruptible supply tariff
Smart Metering Notes: (Collected from a Variety of Sources)
- E Control is supporting the introduction of smart metering in Austria.
- Pilot projects are taking place in a number of areas:
- Energie AG – a trial of 10,000 meters in Upper Austria, expanding to 100,000 by the end of 2010
- Salzburg AG – a trial of 500 meters
- Wien Energie – a trial of 250 meters
- Reluctance by utilities to undertake more installations is primarily as a result of a lack of an agreed standard for the meters that would guarantee that they would not be replaced when a customer switches provider. E Control is working with VEO – the Federation of Electricity Companies and FGW – the Federation of Gas and Heat companies
- No clarity yet on the minimum functionality of the meters. The only thing that is clear is that customers should receive a bill based on an actual monthly read.
- Costs to replace all 5m meters in Austria have been estimated at between 800 million and 1.5 billion Euros
