Implementation in Thailand by PEA

Information provided regarding second phase of an AMI/AMR project in provincial Thailand by the Provincial Electricity Authority.

In 2007 30,000 AMR meters were installed, with a further 5,000 AMI meters being installed in 2009.

All the meters are electricity EDMI meters and feature 2 way GPRS communications, Time of Use tariffing and Load Control/Load Management.

Samart Telecoms are the software provider.

Communicate readings several times a day, which supports an internet service for users who receive alerts if consumption exceeds agreed thresholds.

Also features leak detection, where continuous flow is detected during peak hours – where this happens an email or SMS message is sent to the customer.

AMR Pilot by Meralco in the Philippines

The Manila Electric Co (Meralco), which serves 4.3m customers in the Philippines, has started AMR pilot exercises as the first step towards a full smart grid.

Details on volumes or technologies are not available.

Existing AMR Solution for PECO in Pennsylvania

PECO, a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation has deployed a  Landis+Gyr/Cellnet AMR system.

Exercise to install 2.2 million meters (1.7m electricity & 500,000 gas). The contract was awarded in 1999.  Deployement started immediately and was completed in 2003.

This system is a managed fee-for-service implementation.  Landis+Gyr/Cellnet Owns the AMR Network, communication modules and ~60% of the electric meters

Beyond traditional meter reading benefits, the system is fully integrated to the OMS System to identify and manage outages.  It is also used for Revenue Protection and Distribution System Asset Management purposes.

The system is a fixed RF network.  The meter communication modules are 1-way, transmitting in regular periods.

The project was implemented by PECO, Cellnet and VSI.

GEPCO has undertaken a 100 meter AMR trial using GPRS for Industrial Consumers.

It is being used for billing automation for high-end industry consumers (Electric Furnaces). The major drivers include operational cost saving, revenue protection and overall better customer service.
