SDG&E Plans for Wireless Smart Grid Comms

SDG&E have filed for Federal Stimulus funds in the amount of $30m to support the overall $60m cost of “GridComm”.

 

The project would see all of the utlitity’s 4100 sq mile service territory supported by a layered wireless communications infrastructure. A mix of technologies is being considered, including WiMAX – particularly for the higher bandwidth requirements.

Spokesperson explaining why it was necessary to build out a new network rather than buy from an existing cell provider:

  • performance
  • coverage
  • security

If awarded funds, the two year project would start in 2010. Without stimulus funding, the project would still proceed, but much slower. The funding application names IBM, Cisco and Arcadian Networks as potential partners in the project.
